(ENG) Office LTSC 2019 / 2021 Volume License Installation Tutorial

Introduction

The Office Deployment Tool (ODT) is a command-line tool that allows for customized and efficient installation or configuration of volume versions of Office, ideal for business environments. This tutorial will guide you through the installation of Office LTSC 2021 using ODT.

The new version of Office 2024 is now available. You can buy it here.

Prerequisites

  1. Removal of existing Office versions before installing Office LTSC 2021
  2. Download the Office Deployment Tool (ODT) from the official Microsoft site.
  3. Have a valid Office LTSC 2019 or 2021 license and access to a volume product key, if applicable.
  4. Internet connection to download installation files.

Steps for Installation with ODT

Removing Previous Versions of Office

Before installing Office LTSC 2019 or 2021, it is essential to remove any previous version of Office to prevent software conflicts.

  1. Open the Control Panel: Go to Start, type «Control Panel,» and open it.
  2. Go to Programs and Features: Select «Uninstall a program» under the Programs section.
  3. Uninstall Office: In the list of installed programs, look for any version of Microsoft Office. Click on it and select «Uninstall.» Follow the instructions to complete the process.
  4. Restart the computer (recommended): This ensures that changes take effect and any residual files are removed.

Preparation

  1. Download and Extract ODT: Download the Office Deployment Tool from the provided link and extract the files into a specific folder (for example, C:\ODT).

You will see the file in the download folder of your PC:

  1. Configure the configuration.xml File

(Tip) Instead of using a text editor to create the configuration.xml file, it’s recommended to use the Office Customization Tool (OCT).

  1. Choose the architecture (32 or 64-bit). If you’re unsure, go to «This PC» and right-click «Properties». You’ll access System > Information where you can see your architecture specifications.
  2. Select the product you want to deploy: In our case, Office LTSC Professional Plus 2021: volume license.
  3. Select the update channel. In our case, Office LTSC 2019 / 2021 Perpetual Enterprise. In «select version», indicate «Latest».

  • We choose the applications we wish to install. The more applications selected, the longer the download time will be. Click next to proceed to the Language section.

  • In the Language section, it’s important to select the English version to avoid errors.

  • The next step is to go to Installation. It’s important to keep the «Show installation to user» option active.

  • In the Update section, the selection will be very similar to the previous one. If we have already uninstalled all MSI versions of Office, we might not need to check the «Update Options» box.

  • In the «Licenses and Activation» section, we activate/accept the license terms automatically. We select KMS (more common) and in product activation, we choose user-based activation.

  • The next «General» section is optional. You can fill in the two empty fields or leave them blank.

  • The last section is a summary to review the previous choices. So, click on finish for our XML file to close correctly.

  • Now click on «Export» to transfer the file to your computer.

  • Once you click on export, a window about the «Default File Format» will appear. Click on the second option: Office Open XML Formats and scroll down to click on Accept.

  • After clicking Accept, you’ll be taken to the «XML Export Settings» window. First, accept the license agreement terms and write a file name (without uppercase letters or accents). For example, we recommend naming it, install. Finally, click on Export.

  • An XML file named: install.xml will be downloaded (if you see this window, simply click on keep).

  • Copy or move the file: install.xml to the same location where the ODT file we previously downloaded is. Now we are going to unzip the contents of that ODT file, right-click on that file and click on open.

  • This window of the assistant will open, and we click on Accept > Continue.

  • A tab will open to choose the same location where we want the files to be unzipped.

  • Click on Accept, and this setup file and other example XML configuration files will appear. These example files can be deleted.

  • Now we begin the installation process. For this, in the same path (folder) where the files are located, we execute the cmd command (in the same address bar at the top, you can delete what appears and simply write cmd).

  • Execute it (enter), and this window will open:

  • We go back to our cmd panel and paste the code replacing the configuration.xml file with our install.xml.
  • It would look like this:

  • Press Enter, and the installation process will begin (you will see the white Microsoft window). Similarly, you will see the installation process indicating the programs that will be installed according to our selection, like this:

  • Upon completion of the installation, the following window will appear. Close it, and your Office license will be ready on your PC.

Activate Office LTSC 2019 or 2021

  • Activate using a product key: If you have a volume product key, you can activate Office through an Office application. Open, for example, Word, and follow the instructions to enter the key.
  • Activation via KMS or ADBA: If you are using Key Management Service (KMS) or Active Directory-Based Activation, ensure your KMS server is configured to activate the volume editions of Office 2019 / 2021.

Verification

  • Verify installation and activation: Once installed, open any Office application and check both installation and activation in File > Account or similar.

Troubleshooting

  • If you encounter errors during installation, check the ODT logs typically located in  %temp%.
  • Ensure your configuration.xml file is well formed and error free.

Additional Tips

  • For mass installations or on multiple computers, consider using methods such as installation scripts or configuration management tools like SCCM.
  • Remember to keep security software and the operating system updated to avoid compatibility conflicts.
